As soon as George spotted Trayvon, he could have conservatively assumed that Trayvon was armed with a knife or a gun. By my interpretation of the literal words, "stand your ground", at that point he could not have moved any closer towards a mortal threat for his defense to be valid.

Since the stakes are so high in an encounter between two people, what rights and responsibilities does a person have in instigating or provoking an encounter, especially when they have the capacity to easily deploy deadly force with a gun?

I totally agree with you. Problem is, it is one man's word against a dead man's word, not the ideal recipe for justice. This is why stand your ground with deadly force doesn't work when there are no witnesses.

Do we know who started the physical altercation? No. But we do know that a 200 pound armed man got out of a truck and pursued a stranger at night. If that isn't escalating a situation of cuasation for the stranger to have fear for their life, I don't know what is.

"you can shoot even if they don't attack you" What if they follow you at night and you claim you are in fear for your life? What if Trayvon had a gun and had shot Zimmerman as he was calmly walking towards him. I suppose that would have been legal.

If in Florida, you can shoot someone dead, and your word is taken as fact, then truely it is a license to kill state.

Sorry, any injury is not proof that Trayvon initiated it. George could have made physical contact first.

So in Florida, if two people begin wrestling, it is a fight to the death and either one has the right to shoot the other one. What if they stick a finger in your chest, is that provocation to shoot?
